Organizational Context
Centre for Development and Capacity Building (CDCB) is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization established by a group of practitioners, civic organization leaders and academia. CDCB’s key goal is empowering the people through strengthening institutional and leadership capacity via independent research, tailor-made capacity building trainings, organizing high level forums and implementing innovative projects to be scaled up by government and development partners. CDCB is a proactive and growing organization, whose scopes are promoting democratic values, human right, justice, peaceful and happy life for citizens and whose strategies are networking volunteerism, partnership for effective and efficient delivery. Currently, CDCB, in partnership with VSO is working to promote on the peacebuilding, development and humanitarian efforts in communities living around Ethiopia and Kenya border. The project focuses on among others community engagement, peacebuilding and promoting social cohesion programming that specifically seeks to engage communities in addressing conflict resolutions and peacebuilding initiatives. To implement the project, CDCB is looking for a dedicated Peacebuilding, development and humanitarian and community engagement volunteer to assist the planning and implementation of CDCB’s and VSO’s Peace building, developmental and humanitarian initiatives in Ethiopia and Kenya border as per the following qualification.
Role overview
The purpose of this project is to enhance to realize reduced conflict and enhanced resilience and peaceful co-existence of cross border communities at the Ethiopia-Kenya border.
Job Description
Under general supervision of the Local Project Coordinator the Community volunteer will advocate for peace in their respective communities.
Assignment Title: – Community Volunteer
Duration: 24 months
Location: Moyale and Miyo Woreda, Borana Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia
Number of Position: 10 Individual Volunteer
Remuneration: As CDCB volunteer, you will be sharing your skills with local communities on a full-time basis. CDCB will cover your transportation and basic cost that are directly related to your engagement.
Responsibilities/ Duties
The Community Volunteers will have the following areas of responsibilities/Duties:
- Provide technical assistance in the development of peacebuilding and conflict resolution strategies, development and humanitarian programs;
- Mobilize the community, local structures and various community organizations;
- Support research and intervention-based assessments on conflict and peacebuilding, development and humanitarian issues in target areas and implement monitoring and evaluation systems;
- Participate in selecting community organizations;
- Engage with the communities and relevant stakeholders to build relationships and facilitate partnerships in peacebuilding, development and humanitarian activities;
- Participate in project review meetings with VSO/CDCB Project Manager, Local Project Coordinator and other relevant key stakeholders to reflect on progress of the project Social Cohesion component, identify necessary program adaptations and ensure these adaptations are implemented;
- Cooperate in risk assessment and conflict sensitivity analysis and decision-making processes, including development of tools, facilitation of trainings/workshops, technical support on programming decisions;
- Ensure understanding and adoption of conflict sensitivity concepts and approaches across all Moyale and Miyo Woredas during project implementation;
- Organize, facilitate and conduct trainings plus learning workshops on peacebuilding, development and social cohesion (community mapping and beneficiary selection) and humanitarian interventions.
- Act as the focal point for all Peacebuilding and conflict sensitivity program liaisons with CDCB to facilitate multi-sectoral and conflict sensitive support to the communities in the project sites;
- Maintain regular communication with program staffs in area locality offices for mentorship and reporting; plus establishing and maintaining linkages among relevant stakeholders, and other coordination mechanisms;
- Ensure comprehensive impact assessments of community engagements and peacebuilding initiatives are carried out; and lead on reporting of community engagement and project implementation activities;
- Promote a culture of learning within the team and actively share challenges and lessons learned.
- Work in close collaboration with Government Stakeholders coordinate targeting the peacebuilding, development and humanitarian efforts;
- Facilitate training and intra and inter community peace dialogues;
- Prepare timely project implementation reports including documentation of project best practices.
- Conduct awareness raising and sensitization sessions for Customary leaders, elders and community representatives on the importance and benefits of Women’s engagement and participation local Peace building and conflict transformation efforts.
- Provide regular support to the Project target and balance the interest of marginalized groups of the communities;
- Support coaching and cascading of the skills obtained through the training provided by the project and facilitate household level understanding in project target kebeles.
- Continuously document and share the findings and achievements of local context assessment and opportunities outreaching.
Skills, qualifications and experiences
- Fluency in Local language, Afan Oromo. Additional knowledge of English will be given preference.
- Previous experience in community mobilization and other volunteer activities.
- A minimum od Diploma or any equivalent honors in social science.
- Good reputation and acceptance in cultural, social and religious affairs.
- Ability to work well with a variety of individuals in a challenging, cross-cultural setting.
